Simon
Manning Wins 2008 New Zealand Paper Tiger Nationals
The 2008 Paper Tiger New Zealand National
Championships were held at the New Plymouth Yacht Club
from 2nd - 6th January. A fleet of 37
boats competed the 9 race series.
The overall winner was Simon Manning of the Royal
Akarana Yacht
Club. The contest ran down to the wire with a dead
heat between Simon Manning and Glenn Syman after
reopening of a protest hearing between two other
competitors. Simon won on count back after 3 wins
to Glenns 2.
Bob Preston finished third overall, winning
his fifth successive New Zealand Veterans title.
Bob's form has been outstanding over the last five
seasons with national titles in 2004 and
2005, fourth in 2006, second in 2007 and third by
three points at this years nationals.
Race
Winners were Simon Manning (3), Glenn Syman (2),
Bob Preston (2), Terry Valder (2)
Mark Hatch of
New Plymouth won the B grade finishing 10th. Stuart Morrish
won the C grade finishing in 20th place.
Jason
Johnstone of New Plymouth is the New Zealand
Junior Champion defending his title for the third
year. He finished
11th overall. Sean Syman finished as second junior
and second C grade in 21st place overall.
Lynley
Manning of Evans Bay defended her National Womens
title finishing in 25th place.
Mark Hatch of New Plymouth was awarded the 40
year Anniversary Cup donated by Ron Given to the
NZPTOA for the most improved performance at a
Nationals while Robbie Morrison was awarded the
"Little Things Matter" trophy for his
outstanding to the class and fellow competitors at
this this and previous nationals.
New
Plymouth was
an excellent venue providing challenging sailing conditions with
the magnificent
backdrop of Mount Taranaki and the Sugar Load Islands.
- Racing was very
tight with close finishes
- At the top, 1st
place was shared around between 4 sailors

New
Zealand Team Wins International
The
New ZealandTeam won the 2007 Paper Tiger
Inernational sailed at New Plymouth. The New
Zealand team score was 661 versus 689 for the
Australian Team.
Bruce Rose from Australia won the
individual title. Runner
up was Ben Deed of Victoria, Australia, who has
won the event three times previously. Third place
went to Glenn Syman.
Race
Winners were Mark Wiggins (AUS), Ben Deed (AUS) (2
races), Bruce Rose (AUS) (3 races), Bob Preston
(NZL), Glenn Syman (NZL).
The series started off
with heavy conditions, but this dropped away on
the second day, with the rest sailed in light
airs.

Zealand Paper Tiger Owners Association
(NZPTOA) is the govening body for the Paper
Tiger
class in New Zealand. The class is affliated to
Yachting New Zealand.
The
NZPTOA has area representatives through out New

Rag.
It is published regulary throughout the year and provides an excellent summary of regatta results
and commentaries, upcoming regatta dates and boats
and gear for sale.
